Summary

Mencius is a work in the quotation style recording the sayings and deeds of Mencius and his disciples, and is one of the Four Books of Confucianism. It consists of fourteen chapters: King Hui of Liang, parts one and two; Gongsun Chou, parts one and two; Duke Wen of Teng, parts one and two; Li Lou, parts one and two; Wan Zhang, parts one and two; Gaozi, parts one and two; and Jin Xin, parts one and two. Its contents span politics, ethics, education, and the cultivation of mind and nature, and present above all Mencius's core ideas of the goodness of human nature, benevolent government, the kingly way, the people as the foundation, and the noble spirit. This volume is the Mencius reader in the CITIC Classics of Chinese Studies series. The series, introduced by CITIC Press from the Hong Kong Chung Hwa Book Company edition, appoints the eminent scholar Jao Tsung-I as honorary editor-in-chief and invites scholars at home and abroad to prepare the selections, introductions, and annotated translations. This volume features an introduction and commentary by Huang Chun-chieh, Distinguished Professor in the Department of History at National Taiwan University, with translation and annotation by Wan Lihua and Lan Xu. The main text follows the order of the original fourteen chapters and includes an index of famous passages; the introduction is devoted to exploring the contemporary relevance of Mencius's ideas of the kingly way, the people as the foundation, and benevolent government. The book is positioned as an accessible reader in traditional Chinese learning for general readers, balancing textual reliability with contemporary interpretation, and is suited to those who wish to read Mencius systematically without being blocked by cumbersome commentaries, whether as an introduction or as a volume to return to.

Editor's review

Reading tips

About the author

Chun-chieh Huang Author · Taiwan, China · 1946

Huang Chun-chieh, born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in 1946, is a historian and Confucian scholar whose research centers on East Asian Confucianism, historiography, and general education. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in history from National Taiwan University and later received his doctorate from the University of Washington in the United States. A distinguished chair professor at National Taiwan University and an elected member of the European Academy, he has written extensively on the transmission and transformation of Confucianism in East Asia, an approach reflected in works such as East Asia from the Perspective of Intellectual History. He has also reflected on the place of university education, as seen in General Education in Universities in the Age of Globalization; the inclusion of a practical legal guide on labor and employment issues shows his writing reaches across social culture, education, and law.

Mencius (Mengzi) Author · Chinese

Mencius, whose personal name was Ke and courtesy name Ziyu, was a native of the State of Zou (present-day Zoucheng, Shandong) during the Warring States period. A major representative of Confucianism, he was later honored as the "Second Sage" and is often mentioned together with Confucius as "Confucius and Mencius." He advocated the theory that human nature is good, holding that people are innately inclined toward goodness, and proposed the political ideas of benevolent governance and that "the people are the most important, the ruler the least." Mencius traveled among the states to promote his teachings but was not put in important office by the rulers of his time. In his later years he taught and wrote with his disciples, and his sayings and deeds were compiled into the seven chapters of the Mencius, which was included in the Four Books during the Southern Song dynasty and became one of the Confucian classics. This site holds seven related works, covering categories such as Eastern philosophy, culture, examinations, and classic works; among them, the Mencius and compilations of Chinese classics are the most common, reflecting the enduring influence of his thought on later cultural education and the reading of classics.
