Meifang

Summary
The area around Tangxi Town in Jinhua, Zhejiang, was in ancient times the mountainous western frontier of the State of Yue. Descendants of Shang Tang migrated here, and over several thousand years their accent and way of life have been passed down without interruption, surviving to this day. Historical records call these people the Gumie, also known as the Gumei. In the ancient era of countless states and peoples, the Gumei held their own territory, known as the "Meifang." Centering on the family of the contemporary linguist Shen Zhaoping, the book focuses on the changing fortunes of four generations over more than a century, from the late Qing through the Republic, the founding of New China, and reform and opening up to the present: Shen Zhaoping's great-grandfather on his mother's side, Xia Yushu; his maternal grandmother, Xia Guangmei; his mother, Cheng Lanyu; and Shen Zhaoping himself. All the characters come from the Meifang or are connected to it by blood; their fates are the contemporary release of the unique culture and history that the Meifang has accumulated over centuries. A century of China and a millennium of the Meifang sustain each other as these fates unfold, imbuing the work with the depth and weight of vast spans of time. They walk forward from the late Qing and onward toward a nation ten thousand years old; what once seemed like the future is never quite here. This is not a national history of several generations rising and falling over a century, nor a tale of dramatic joys and sorrows, but a notebook that, through the ark of the Meifang and the forms of the Meifang people, bears witness to an eternal nation and an undying heart.
Editor's review
Who it's for
A good fit for
- Readers of contemporary Chinese novels who are willing to read slowly
- Readers interested in Zhejiang regional culture and the historical memory of the Gumie and Gumei
- Readers drawn to family narrative and the theme of civilizational roots
- Readers studying Zhang Guangtian's work or the cultural turn in contemporary fiction
Not a good fit for
- Readers who prefer fast-paced plots and strong conflict
- Readers expecting popular family-country sagas or tales of joys and sorrows
- Readers with limited patience for culturally investigative narration
Reading tips
- Begin with the opening account of Meifang's geography and ethnicity to establish the spatiotemporal coordinates before entering the character lines.
- Trace the relationships in the order of the four generations, noting the genealogy among Xia Yushu, Xia Guangmei, Cheng Lanyu, and Shen Zhaoping.
- Do not pause over dialect, ancient names, or cultural details; read straight through first, then revisit relevant passages afterward.
- Best read in several sittings, leaving time after each to digest the temporal leaps and cultural layering in the narration.

About the author
Zhang Guangtian is an author about whom limited public information is available. What can be confirmed is that his writing is mainly social fiction, and three of his works are included in the collection: the two-volume novel Lai Ri Ke Zhui, Nanrong Jia de Yue, and Mei Fang. These works suggest that Zhang focuses on the intertwined fates of individuals, families, and localities, using narrative to present the situations and choices of ordinary people amid social change, with a strong sense of realism and close observation of social life. His novels do not rely on sensational plots but instead develop character relationships and the atmosphere of the times through the details of everyday life, in a plain yet delicate style. Because no clear records of his biography, nationality, or writing career are available, his overall literary development and influence cannot yet be fully assessed; the above introduction is based only on the subjects and categories of the works in the collection, and a fuller understanding must await the release of more public information.
