Summary

Every great philosopher has played a vital role in the history of philosophy. From Plato, Aristotle, Kant and Hegel to Quine, Hintikka, Davidson and Dummett, all have guided the development of philosophy with profound thought. Beyond them, the scholarly attitude and ideas of certain experts and academics are also admirable and worth learning from, such as Scheffler and Niels. In China, too, there is a group of senior scholars whose approaches to scholarship have deeply influenced academic research in this country and serve as models for us, including Jin Yuelin, Zhou Liquan, Wang Zisong, Chen Kang, Shen Youding, Liang Cunxiu, Ye Xiushan, Li Funing, Wang Bingwen and others. From this perspective, recalling and commemorating these masters of philosophy is both necessary and of great significance. The book is divided into two parts, recalling some 37 masters, ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign. By reviewing the lives and intellectual development of these philosophers and recording recollections of several predecessors in Chinese philosophy, the author seeks to trace an academic tradition—one created, carried forward and enriched by these masters, which has influenced and inspired a generation of philosophical workers and laid the foundation for the future development of philosophy.

Editor's review

The Tradition of Masters is the young scholar Wang Lu's second collection of academic essays, following The Square and Circle of Logic. The book focuses on the seminal thinkers who founded schools in the history of philosophy—from Plato and Aristotle in ancient Greece to Augustine and Aquinas in the Middle Ages, and Kant and Hegel in the modern era—attempting to trace their intellectual threads and lines of transmission in order to sketch the most fundamental "problematic" and modes of thinking within the Western philosophical tradition.

Wang Lu's style combines academic rigor with readability. He is not content merely to restate commonplaces of philosophical history; rather, he strives to show how the masters confronted the fundamental questions posed by their times and how they responded with creative thought, thereby forming an enduring intellectual tradition. His understanding of "tradition" is especially profound: tradition is not a dead legacy but a living resource of thought, continually reinterpreted and reactivated. Readers will see that every major breakthrough in the history of philosophy tends not to discard predecessors outright but to achieve creative transformation on the basis of a deep understanding of tradition.

What is particularly commendable is the book's problem-oriented approach. Each chapter revolves around a core philosophical question—such as "how is metaphysics possible," "what is the foundation of knowledge," "the relation between freedom and necessity"—and through the masters' differing answers, readers directly sense the depth of philosophical thinking and its logic of development. For readers who want a systematic grasp of the Western philosophical tradition without drowning in dry stacks of historical material, this book offers an excellent entry point. It helps readers build a basic framework of philosophical history while also prompting independent thought about philosophical questions themselves.

  3. Don't rush abstract passages; slow down and savor them—philosophical thinking itself takes time to settle
