Summary
An Ordinary Year narrates the story of three generations of women—grandmother, mother, and daughter—in a rural village in the 1960s. The mother's elder brother leaves home to escape famine, and her elder sister marries far away, leaving the youngest, the mother, to depend on her aged parents. To care for them, she has to take on the role of head of the household.
After marriage, the mother cannot inherit land or a homestead; locals regard her as water poured out, and she is repeatedly driven off her own land and house. In defense of a few mu of poor soil, she breaks down time and again, unable to find where "my" home is. All her life she wants to bear a son to bring honor to the family and change her fate through him, but never succeeds.
Long years of poverty and hardship coarsen, warp, and twist her, and this unease and distortion pass to her daughter after birth as mental suffering. The text alternates between the mother's and the daughter's perspectives, presenting the psychological situations of three generations of women: the frightened, helpless woman endures life's abuse while also creating tribulations in life and passing the pain on to her daughter.
The daughter resists her mother's tyranny yet, through constant exposure, gradually comes to understand her mother's anguish. The entanglement, struggle, and hostility between the two generations persist for years as each experiences her own mother/daughter identity, until at last, in the flood of time, the two generations of women reach reconciliation.
Editor's review
In literary terms, Dahan embodies the new generation's inheritance of and innovation within the realist tradition. The stories focus on small-town youth, urban drifters, and midlife predicaments, refracting the collective anxiety and hope of a society in transition through the writing of individual fates. The author's grasp of detail is precise and poetic: in the title story, the rendering of the cold northern winter atmosphere not only creates a distinctive literary mood but also forms a subtle intertext with the characters' psychological states.
As an editor, I believe the most valuable quality of this work is its sincere approach to writing. Zhang Dongxiao does not cater to market trends but holds fast to her own literary pursuit, using solid prose to build a world that is both real and richly metaphorical. For readers who favor strong literary quality and psychological depth, Dahan offers a rare immersive reading experience. It asks the reader to slow down and follow the author's brushstrokes into the characters' inner lives; in doing so, one encounters not only the pull of the stories but also literature's profound insight into the essence of life.
