Daredevil #165

This volume is issue #165 of Marvel's Daredevil Vol. 1 (serialized since 1964), titled “Arms of the Octopus,” with a July 1980 cover date (actually released in April 1980). Daredevil Matt Murdock investigates a batch of stolen adamantium, but the trail leads to Glenn Industries, run by his ex-girlfriend Heather Glenn—whose board is secretly selling a New Jersey electronics plant to a mysterious buyer. While Heather is alone reviewing company documents, she is abducted by familiar metal tentacles. Daredevil intercepts the alloy deal at the docks, and Doctor Octopus, Otto Octavius, suddenly appears and holds him underwater, nearly drowning him; he escapes by playing dead, then rushes to the Glenn Industries plant and confronts Doctor Octopus, who has switched to new adamantium tentacles. With the odds overwhelming, Heather cuts a rope with broken glass and slashes the villain, while Daredevil tricks Doctor Octopus into hitting high-voltage wires and knocks him down. In the ending, Heather and Matt reconcile, and the Black Widow, who has secretly arrived, confirms that Matt truly loves Heather and decides to leave New York. This issue is also the first in which Doctor Octopus is equipped with adamantium tentacles; written and drawn by Frank Miller, it is an important node in establishing the dark, hard-boiled style of Daredevil.
