Night Song

Night Song is a long wuxia romance novel by Ziwei Liunian, serialized on Jinjiang Literature City starting in 2008; this is the 2015 collector's edition (two volumes) published by Jiangsu Phoenix Literature and Art Publishing House. The story is set in the Tianshan Mountains and Jiangnan. The girl Jiaye (Jun Pianxian) has been imprisoned since childhood in the Tianshan demon cult; to take revenge she tests poisons on herself and trains in strange arts through years of heat and cold, yet her face remains that of a child. The youth Xie Yunshu was once the third young master of the Xie family, famous throughout Jiangnan; captured and taken to a remote wilderness, he bends his pride to become a slave, enduring humiliation, and is finally assigned to Jiaye as a shadow guard, given the name Shuying. In a desperate world of blades and blood, the two support each other and risk death together, moving from wary suspicion to trusting each other with their lives. Over the following years storms arise repeatedly; Jiaye, believing herself unworthy because of her origins and condition, leaves without a word. Xie Yunshu breaks free of his cage and returns to the Central Plains, searching north and south without finding her; just as his heart grows cold, a woman who seems to be Jiaye appears again, and a long pursuit and reckoning begins. The book is linked by sections such as Yuanshan, Jiangnan, Diexie and Biyi, writing of the killings and stratagems of the martial world as well as the tenderness and restraint of deep love, and is regarded as one of the representative works of female-oriented wuxia romance.
