Zhou Ciqing

This book is one volume in the series One Hundred Distinguished Chinese Physicians of the Past Century, and is devoted to organizing the academic experience of the nationally renowned senior Chinese medicine physician Zhou Ciqing (1920–2003). Zhou Ciqing was a professor, chief physician, and doctoral supervisor at Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He worked in Chinese medicine for nearly sixty years and was skilled in complex internal diseases, with especially deep attainments in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of cardiovascular disease. He led the project "Clinical and Experimental Research on Treating Coronary Heart Disease by Supplementing Qi and Activating Blood Circulation" and participated in the development of the Chinese patent medicine Zhengxintai for coronary heart disease. The book is arranged in four parts: a brief biography of the physician, treatment of specific diseases, informal clinical discussions, and a chronological biography. The biography recounts his medical training, the formation of his academic thought, and his career in teaching and mentoring. The section on specific diseases addresses coronary heart disease, acute myocardial infarction, hypertension, arrhythmia, viral myocarditis, pulmonary heart disease, rheumatic heart disease, heart failure, cardiac neurosis, migraine, and chronic gastritis, setting out his understanding of etiology and pathogenesis, his approach to pattern differentiation, his treatment methods and formulas, and his case records. The informal discussions collect his clinical insights on such topics as the clinical application of the method of activating blood circulation and resolving stasis, blood deficiency and anemia, disharmony between the heart and kidney, how to respond when there are "no symptoms to differentiate," and the use of Sini San. The chronological biography briefly outlines the major events of his life. The book as a whole reflects his consistent approach of combining pattern differentiation with disease differentiation, emphasizing holistic regulation of qi and blood, and advocating mutual verification between Chinese and Western medicine. It is suitable as a reader for studying his clinical experience.
