Summary

Lü Bu, the foremost warrior of the Three Kingdoms, was born on the Hetao Plain in Wuyuan Commandery. His father, Lü Liang, was a general stationed at Wuyuan. Trained by his father and by instructors, Lü Bu grew into a border hero who killed enemies by the age of sixteen. Summoned by the imperial court, he was about to lead his troops away from Wuyuan when his father Lü Liang fell victim to an enemy plot and met his death. With the Han army left without a leader, Lü Bu stepped forward without hesitation, led the Han forces to drive back the Xiongnu, and searched for his father's body. Unable to find him, he had no choice but to lead the main army back to the capital.

Editor's review

Lü Bu is a full-length historical novel by Wang Fulin centered on the famous Three Kingdoms general Lü Bu. The book has not built a broad reader-rating base on mainstream platforms such as Douban; it is a relatively niche yet distinctly themed biographical novel of a historical figure. Published by Yuanfang Publishing House, it focuses on Lü Bu, a historical figure full of contradictions and tragic color, and seeks through a literary touch to recreate his complex life from frontier warrior to regional warlord and ultimately to his downfall.

In terms of content value, the book's uniqueness lies in choosing as its absolute protagonist a controversial figure who appears in official histories mostly as "brave but devoid of strategy" and "capricious." Author Wang Fulin clearly attempts to break through the stereotyped image shaped by classic texts such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms and to dig deep into the motives behind Lü Bu's actions, the causes of his character, and the dilemmas of his era. Regarding Lü Bu's relationships with Ding Yuan, Dong Zhuo, Wang Yun, and others, his emotional entanglement with Diaochan, and key events such as shooting the halberd at the camp gate and his death at White Gate Tower, the book may offer detailed depiction and psychological portrayal different from mainstream narratives.

For readers familiar with Three Kingdoms stories, reading this book is more like a challenge to and supplement for established perceptions. It may not aim to "reverse the verdict" on Lü Bu, but at least it provides a more three-dimensional and humanized perspective for understanding the choices and fate of this hero of chaotic times. The author's writing style leans toward traditional historical fiction, emphasizing plot progression and scene description, suitable for readers who enjoy immersive historical narrative. It should be noted that as a character-centered novel, the rigor of its historical research and the boundaries of its literary imagination are points readers can weigh and savor for themselves while reading.

About the author

王福林 Author

Wang Fulin is an author about whom limited public information is available. Six of his works are held in the collection, including such representative titles as Lü Bu, The Lama Brother and Er Meizi, Wild Soul, Mortal Dust, Village Soul, and Lost in Love. Judging from these titles and their common categories, his writing spans alternate-continent fantasy, social fiction, and war and military themes. Some works build imaginative narratives around historical or invented worlds, while others focus on rural life and the fates of ordinary people, giving his output a varied character that combines realism with legend. Because details such as his birth year, native place, education, and writing career cannot be verified, a full picture of his life is difficult to sketch, and readers can come to know him mainly through his works. The available materials also contain no clear record of awards, sales figures, or public evaluation, so his literary influence remains to be clarified by more complete bibliographic and critical sources.
