About the author
William Thackeray is an English novelist. Publicly available information about the dates of his birth and death and the details of his life is limited, but he is known to Chinese readers mainly through his novel Vanity Fair. This site holds eleven of his works, most of them separate volumes and editions of Vanity Fair, along with a collection of selected foreign classics, which shows that his representative work continues to be read in the categories of foreign literature and world classics. Thackeray's writing is known for its satire: in a calm and somewhat cool tone he portrays society and its people, exposing the vanity, calculation and self-deception of human nature in the fair of the world, and his narratives often include commentary and irony. Vanity Fair unfolds around the fates of several characters, with a broad structure and vivid characters, and offers a detailed picture of nineteenth-century English society; for this reason it has become one of the foreign classics repeatedly translated and introduced in the Chinese-speaking world.
