Summary

The Records of the Grand Historian is China's first comprehensive history written in biographical form, covering nearly three thousand years from the legendary Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors down to the reign of Emperor Wu of Han. Its author, Sima Qian, was a man of brilliant talent; his prose is marked by a clear sense of love and hate, filling the work with artistic appeal — readers may draw lessons from its historical record even as they lose themselves in it as in any literary work. Lu Xun praised it as “the ultimate song of historians, the Li Sao without rhyme.”

Editor's review

As the first comprehensive history in China written in the biographical (annals-and-biographies) style, the position and value of Records of the Grand Historian need no elaboration. This monumental work, forged by Sima Qian with the effort of a lifetime, not only pioneered a new format for historical writing but also elevated history writing from simple record-keeping to the level of literature and philosophy. This edition from Northern Women and Children's Publishing House, though aimed at a general audience, offers relatively clear original text and accessible annotations among popular readings, lowering the threshold for ordinary readers—especially young people—encountering this classic for the first time. From a professional standpoint, the edition's strength is its readability and approachability: annotations are concise and the layout is spacious, making it suitable as an introductory guide to the Records. For readers pursuing in-depth research and rigorous textual criticism, however, it may seem a little thin, as it emphasizes narrative of historical stories and conveyance of core ideas rather than detailed scholarly examination. Reading the Records is not only a way to understand the long history from the Yellow Emperor to Emperor Wu of Han but also to feel Sima Qian's grand ambition and profound thought—"to explore the relationship between Heaven and humanity, to comprehend the changes of past and present, and to establish a school of thought of his own." The vividness of his characters and the vicissitudes of their fates still resonate powerfully and enlighten today.

Reading tips

  1. For a first reading, start with the "Biographies" sections of figures that interest you, such as "Basic Annals of Xiang Yu" and "Biography of the Marquis of Huaiyin," to feel their literary charm
  2. Read with a map or a simple chronological table to build a framework of time and space and understand the sequence of events
  3. Do not feel obliged to read straight through; keep it as a reference book, reading section by section according to interest, and reflect on the Grand Historian's art of praise and blame (the "Spring and Autumn style")

FAQ

Is this edition complete or abridged?
This edition is generally a selected translation or compilation rather than the complete scholarly text. It selects the most representative and narrative-rich sections of the Records and provides vernacular translation or brief annotations for popularization. For the complete original text, look for other scholarly editions.
Is this edition suitable as supplementary reading for students?
Relatively suitable. Editions from this publisher generally use plain language and annotate common difficulties, helping students overcome the barriers of literary Chinese and sparking interest in history; it is a good supplementary reader connecting with classroom history learning.
Where does the literary value of the Records lie?
The Records has been praised as "a Li Sao without rhyme," and its literary value is extremely high. Sima Qian uses superb narrative technique to create many full-blooded characters with distinct personalities; the language is vivid and expressive, and scene descriptions have great dramatic tension. It founded the tradition of Chinese biographical literature and has had a profound influence on later fiction and prose.

About the author

Sima Qian Author · Chinese (Western Han)

Sima Qian was a historian, man of letters, and thinker of the Western Han dynasty. His courtesy name was Zichang, and he was a native of Xiayang in Zuo Fengyi (present-day Hancheng, Shaanxi). Succeeding his father Sima Tan as Grand Astrologer, he traveled widely to collect historical materials. Later, having suffered punishment in connection with the Li Ling affair, he endured humiliation and devoted himself to his work, ultimately completing the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji, originally titled Taishigong shu), China's first comprehensive history in the biographical (jizhuanti) style. The work covers events from the Yellow Emperor down to Emperor Wu of Han, organizing three thousand years of history through the five sections of annals, tables, treatises, hereditary houses, and biographies. Its narrative is concise and richly literary, its characters vividly drawn, and it has been praised as "the supreme swan song of historians." Later generations have often classified his writings under historical reading and Eastern philosophy, and his influence on Chinese historiography and literature has been profound.
