Summary

This is a short book on the history of Greece and Rome. The author attempts, concisely and without redundancy, to sketch the outline of the development of classical Greek society. In the book, accounts of figures, institutions, wars, reforms, and social customs and cultural life are interwoven with analysis and explanation, so that the tendency of history can be shown through the historical facts, and the meaning of concrete historical facts can also be seen from the direction of history.

Editor's review

The Ancient Greeks and Romans by historian Wu Yujin is a classic work published by SDX Joint Publishing Company. Rather than an exhaustive general history, it sketches with concise strokes the core contours and spiritual character of Greco-Roman civilization. Writing with a command of both Chinese and Western learning, Wu unfolds complex political change, intellectual development, and social structure within a clear historical narrative. He pays particular attention to how these two civilizations shaped the political ideas, legal spirit, and cultural traditions of the Western world and profoundly influenced later ages. The value of reading this book lies in the broad, penetrating historical vision through which readers can understand the modern resonance of the classical heritage. It is not a simple listing of facts but an analysis and interpretation grounded in solid sources, guiding readers to reflect on the inner logic of historical development and the enduring question of dialogue among civilizations. For readers who wish to go beyond surface stories and explore the origins of Western civilization, it is a rare guide that serves both as an introduction and as a path to deeper study.

About the author

Wu Yujin Author · Chinese · 1913–1993

Wu Yujin (1913–1993) was born in Xiuning, Anhui, and was one of the important founders of the discipline of world history in China. He taught for many years at Wuhan University and served as its vice president. He received his PhD in philosophy from Harvard University in 1946 and returned to China in 1947 to teach, devoting himself thereafter to the teaching and study of world history. With Zhou Yiliang and other scholars, he co-edited authoritative textbooks such as A General History of the World and World History, which influenced several generations of readers. Academically, he advocated a "holistic view of world history," emphasizing the understanding of different civilizations' historical processes through overall connections. His representative work, Ancient Greece and Rome, presents classical civilization with solid historical sources and clear narration. He also wrote or edited works including Selected Famous Works of Foreign Historiography, contributing to the popularization of world history knowledge and the development of the discipline.
