Summary

This is Volume Two of the four-volume Ancient Chinese, edited by Wang Li. A humanities textbook for colleges and universities, it follows the three-part format of "selected readings, common words, and general principles of ancient Chinese." Continuing from Volume One, this volume covers Units Five, Six, and Seven. Unit Five's selected readings include passages from Mozi ("Against Offensive War"), Laozi, and Zhuangzi ("There Is a Fish in the North Sea," "The Medicine for Preventing Chapped Hands," "Cook Ding Carves an Ox," "Rifling Trunks," "The Hundred Rivers Pour into the River," "Zhuangzi Fishes in the Pu River," "Huizi Becomes Premier of Liang," "The Wind from the Axe," and "Cao Shang Sent on a Mission to Qin"), Xunzi's "Encouraging Learning," Lüshi Chunqiu's "Examining Reports," and Han Feizi's "Five Vermin." The general principles cover conjunctions, prepositions, sentence-initial and sentence-medial modal particles, and prefixes and suffixes. Unit Six's readings are selections from the Book of Songs, from the Airs of the States—"Guan Ju," "Juan Er," "Fou Yi," "Meng," "Shu Li," "My Lord Is on Service," "Fa Tan," "Big Rat," and "Reed"—through the Minor Odes' "Jie Nan Shan," the Major Odes' "Gong Liu," and the Hymns' "Yi Xi." The general principles cover the rhymes of the Book of Songs, alliteration and rhyme, and ancient phonetic loan characters. Unit Seven's readings are from the Songs of Chu, including "Li Sao," "Mountain Spirit," "Hymn to the Fallen," "Lament for Ying," "Divination," and "The Fisherman." The general principles cover annotations to ancient books. The book ends with a comparative table of simplified and traditional characters, examples of Chinese character radicals, a table of ancient rhyme categories with common characters assigned to them, and a classification table of common characters by ancient initials. Organized around the selected readings, the book integrates common words and general principles with the readings to develop students' ability to read ancient texts.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • 高校中文系、古典文献等专业修读古代汉语课程的学生
  • 准备考研或参加古代汉语科目考试、需要系统过一遍文选与通论的自学者
  • 中学语文教师及文言文教学从业者,用于查考选文注释与语法点
  • 对先秦诸子、《诗经》《楚辞》有兴趣、希望借助注释精读原典的普通读者

Not a good fit for

  • 完全零基础、只想随手翻翻文言小故事的读者,本书为教材体例,需逐单元研读
  • 希望一册通读整部《古代汉语》的读者,本册仅为四册中的第二册,不带第一册的入门内容
  • 需要当代学术新观点、新出土材料研究综述的专业研究者

Reading tips

FAQ
