Selected and Annotated Medical Cases of Famous Physicians Ancient and Modern was compiled by Tao Guangzheng and Gao Chunyuan and published by China Press of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1999. The book runs about 440,000 characters over 616 pages and is divided into a general introduction and a separate discussion. The general introduction systematically traces the development of traditional Chinese medical case records, explains the necessity and methods of studying medical cases, and introduces the major case-record works of successive dynasties one by one, amounting to a practical annotated bibliography of case literature that helps readers first establish a framework for "what to read and how to read it." The separate discussion is divided into six categories—internal medicine miscellaneous diseases, cold damage and warm diseases, gynecology, pediatrics, dermatology and surgery, and the five sense organs—selecting 96 common clinical diseases and syndromes and compiling more than 400 medical cases by famous physicians ancient and modern. Each disease and syndrome is preceded by a "General Outline" briefly discussing its pattern differentiation and key points of treatment; each collected case is followed by an "Analysis" summarizing and commenting on the differentiation approach, treatment principles and prescriptions, and medication characteristics, striving to let readers see both rules and variations in individual cases. The book organizes cases by disease and uses cases to illustrate principles, balancing documentary value with clinical practicality. It is suitable for traditional Chinese medicine clinicians to study alongside their practice, and also for students of Chinese medicine colleges and enthusiasts as an introductory anthology of medical cases.
