About the author
Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–1778) was an Enlightenment thinker, philosopher, writer and educator born in Geneva. He held that people are born free and that sovereignty resides in the people, traced social inequality to private property and the advance of civilization, and argued that education should return to nature and follow children's natural development. His major works, including The Social Contract, A Discourse on Inequality, Emile and Confessions, span political philosophy, educational theory and autobiographical literature, combining rigorous argument with deep personal feeling. The nine works available on this site cover philosophy, essays and biography, reflecting the breadth of his writing. Rousseau's thought profoundly influenced the French Revolution, Romanticism and modern education, and remains a key source for understanding modern political and educational ideas.
