A Thousand Jun

A Thousand Jun is an alternate-history novel serialized and completed by web author Fu Tian (real name Zhang Shuyu) on Qidian in 2006. It totals about 748,400 characters and 242 main chapters and is a companion piece to Fu Tian's breakout work, Strange Tales of Lingyun. The author originally conceived a story of "two protagonists swapping souls," then split the idea into two related works: Strange Tales of Lingyun begins with the youthful Feng Wuhen amid palace intrigue and court politics, while A Thousand Jun begins with the youthful Lian Junru amid a struggle that runs from family to state and from court to countryside—two sides of the same coin. A Thousand Jun opens in the wild: Lian Junru, son of a poor hunter, climbs to a cliff edge to raid a bird's nest to nourish his ailing father, only to catch a dying old crow. After a thunderclap, his consciousness overlaps and swaps with that of the frail prince Feng Wuhen deep in the palace, thrusting a lowly youth into a dynastic chess game walled off by status, martial power, and wealth. The epigraph reads: "Do not look at me with those contemptuous eyes... lowly as I am, I can only smile silently in the dark... one word weighs a thousand jun." The protagonist has no honored status, no formidable martial power, and no wealth to rival a nation; all he can rely on are patience, observation, and speech—when to speak, to whom, and what to say all become stakes deciding life and death and the shape of the board. Set against the decline of the Central Plains royal authority and the division of the realm among regional lords, the book unfolds its political maneuvering around the symbolic identity of "Envoy-Duke," moving from forced acceptance of the charge to gradually seizing the initiative, and finally to a reconstruction of the realm under one rule. The prose is steady and restrained, emphasizing logic and gamesmanship: a slow-burn historical political novel.
