Summary

True Transmission of the Medical School is a collection of clinical experience from famous senior Chinese medicine practitioners, compiled by some students of the 1956 class of Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. From the 1950s to the early 1960s, while studying at the college, these students followed famous senior doctors in Beijing and elsewhere during consultations, copied prescriptions, attended lectures, and jotted down the diagnostic reasoning, prescribing methods, and proven cases their teachers passed on by word of mouth. After nearly thirty years of accumulation and loss, the material was finally edited into a book under the chief editorship of Shi Guobi, totaling about 229,000 characters. The book gathers the experience of 44 senior Chinese medicine figures, including Qu Wenlou, the last imperial physician of the Qing court and later adviser to Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Qin Bowei and Zhang Cigong, former Chinese medicine advisers to the Ministry of Health; Ren Yingqiu, former vice president of the All-China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine; and Zhao Bingnan, former director of the Beijing Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It also includes the clinical insights of heads of relevant teaching and research sections and clinical departments at Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Most of these seniors have since passed away, making the surviving records especially precious. The book is organized by department and disease rather than by person: the internal medicine section proceeds through liver, heart, spleen, lung, and kidney diseases, covering treatment of liver disease, use of Minor Bupleurum Decoction, peptic ulcer, cough and asthma, blood diseases, dysentery, and hiccup; thereafter come gynecology (menstrual regulation, flooding and spotting, leukorrhea, pelvic inflammation), pediatrics (measles pneumonia, infantile diarrhea), surgery and orthopedics (dermatologic surgery, tendon-treatment manipulation), ophthalmology and ENT, and acupuncture (essential principles of abscess drainage, ten methods of point selection, shallow needling for ankle sprain); general articles are grouped under "Medical Cases, Medical Talks, and Miscellaneous," along with several pieces recounting the academic thought and scholarly spirit of Qin Bowei, Song Xiangyuan, and others. Though the records are fragmentary or cover only one aspect, they offer a glimpse of the academic characteristics and specialties of the older generation of physicians and are important primary material for studying modern Chinese medicine's master-disciple education.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
