Medical Outlines

Medical Outlines (Yilüe) in four juan was written by the Qing dynasty physician Qian Yigui. The book chiefly excerpts the essentials of medical texts from successive dynasties, distinguishes their biases, and examines their similarities and differences; it does not reproduce ancient formulas in full, aiming instead to reconcile the various schools with the author's own views and establish standards for clinical practice. Juan One discusses pulse methods and therapeutic principles, with miscellaneous discussions of topics such as renying and cunkou, Chongyang and Taixi, the gate of life, the triple burner, pregnancy pulses, extraordinary vessel pulses, root and branch, sovereign and ministerial fire, counteractive assistance, ancient systems, and the excess and insufficiency of yin and yang, expounding personal views while gathering the essentials of earlier discussions. Juan Two discusses the diagnosis and treatment of major internal medicine and gynecological diseases, focusing on causes, pathology, and patterns of differentiation. Juan Three examines the five viscera and six bowels, the twelve channels, and the eight extraordinary vessels, forming the basic theory section. Juan Four collects simple empirical formulas for easy use. The book has clear outlines and concise discussions; it is both a compilation of a Qing physician's reflections on the classics and a reference for understanding mid-Qing Chinese medical theory and clinical thinking. This publication is a photocopy reprint based on the Shenyu Tang edition of the twenty-third year of the Jiaqing reign (wuyin year) held by the Library of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, included in the Reprint Series of Rare Editions of Ancient Medical Texts Preserved in Their Original Form, retaining the original appearance of the book for comparative study by researchers of Chinese medical literature and lovers of ancient books.
