Editor's review
Who it's for
A good fit for
- TCM students who need to connect theory with clinical practice
- Frontline TCM clinicians seeking approaches to complex and difficult cases
- Practitioners who combine acupuncture with herbal medicine and care about the practical details of combining them
- TCM enthusiasts with some foundation who want to understand pattern identification through case records
Not a good fit for
- Readers with no TCM background at all; the dense terminology may be discouraging
- Readers looking for a quick-reference manual on a single disease; this is not a reference-book format
- Modern-medical readers expecting strict randomized controlled clinical evidence
Reading tips
- Read the series' basic theory volume first, then move on to the cases for smoother understanding
- For each case, first attempt your own pattern identification and prescription, then compare with the author's reasoning to spot differences
- Keep a notebook of recurring formula-medicinal and acupoint combinations and review it regularly
- Read alongside the clinical meridians volume to reinforce the logic of acupuncture point selection

About the author
Xie Xincai, born in October 1966, is a chief physician. He received his master's degree from Capital Medical University in 1995 and studied under He Puren, a master of traditional Chinese medicine. He works in the acupuncture department of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a member of the third national cohort of academic heirs in Chinese medicine, and serves as vice president of the Academic Schools Research and Inheritance Professional Committee of the China Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion. His writings focus on acupuncture and clinical Chinese medicine, with six published works, including Meridian Clinical Practice, Clinical Chinese Materia Medica, Medical Cases, Medical Talks, and the two volumes TCM Heart Readings: Explorations and TCM Heart Readings: Health Preservation. These span clinical practice, case records, and health preservation, and are generally classified under medicine and health. Publicly available information on his life and academic career is limited, so readers must mainly rely on these works to understand him and his scholarship.
Sun Yue is an author about whom little public information is available; what is known is that her works focus on medicine and health, with seven titles held in the collection. Her writing addresses clinical practice in traditional Chinese medicine and health preservation. Representative works include Gems of He Puren's Acupuncture Way, Clinical Meridian Studies, Medical Case Records, Clinical Chinese Materia Medica, and Medical Talks, as well as Traditional Chinese Medicine Reflections: Explorations and Traditional Chinese Medicine Reflections: Health Preservation. Judging from the titles and categories, these works cover core TCM subjects such as acupuncture, meridians, Chinese materia medica, case records, and medical talks, combining clinical experience with explorations of TCM theory and everyday health cultivation. The two Reflections volumes, pairing exploration with health preservation, suggest an interest in how traditional medical knowledge can be applied to contemporary life and health maintenance. Overall, her writing tends toward practical, experience-based accounts and is suited to readers interested in TCM clinical practice and daily health care.
