Summary

Medical Errors in Practice is a monograph on misdiagnosis and mistreatment in traditional Chinese medicine, compiled by He Xueze. First published in 1986 by Shaanxi Science and Technology Press, it was reissued in 2010 by China Press of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The author consulted hundreds of medical texts ancient and modern and thousands of medical journals, gathered more than six hundred cases of misdiagnosis and mistreatment, and selected the more typical ones for case-by-case analysis. The reissue added over a hundred cases to the original, bringing the total to more than three hundred. The cases come from the works of ancient physicians and papers by modern experts, as well as from TCM journals and Japanese Kampo medical magazines; among them are cases of students treating wrongly and teachers misdiagnosing. Breaking with the conventional case-record format and drawing on the strengths of the TCM medical essay, the book gives each case its own title, most titles paired in parallel, such as "High Blood Pressure: Misreading the Organs and Meridians" answering "Low Blood Pressure: Relying Solely on Shiquan Dabu." Each case unfolds in three parts: the course of the error and its consequences, an analysis of the cause, and the author's reflections and the correct approach. The author traces errors to incomplete four-diagnosis examination, neglected etiology, wrong pattern differentiation, improper treatment principles, inaccurate formula selection, and inflexible drug use, covering such specific problems as mistaking cold for heat or deficiency for excess, unclear organ and meridian identification, medicine overshooting the disease, inappropriate dosage, and rigid assumptions about age and constitution. Apart from a few fatal cases, most patients recovered after renewed pattern differentiation and treatment, so the book offers both cautionary lessons and successful experiences in rescuing severe and complex cases. Professor Jiang Chunhua wrote the preface.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
