Summary
A Humble Member of the Medical Forest is a collection of clinical experience by Wang Jimei (1925–2016), a renowned traditional Chinese medicine physician of eastern Fujian, published by Fujian Science and Technology Press in 1990. Wang Jimei came from a family of Confucian physicians in Fuding, Fujian; from childhood he recited the Materia Medica Rhymed Ode, the Song of Decoctions, and the Three-Character Classic of Medicine with his father, and after graduating from a teachers college he taught while studying medicine on his own. In 1946 he began practicing medicine in place of his father and later served successively as director of the Fuding County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, director of the Fuding County Institute of Medicine and Pharmacology, and vice chairman of the Ningde Prefecture Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He was skilled in internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, and stomatology, and excelled in using emetic, purgative, blood-breaking, and pathogen-attacking methods to treat acute and critical cases. The book unfolds in a framework of "medical discourse—case records and talks—ancestral proven formulas": the medical discourse section explains his distinctive understanding of pattern identification and treatment methods, along with insights from studying the Inner Canon, the Treatise on Cold Damage, the Synopsis of the Golden Chamber, and the Jin-Yuan masters (with particular emphasis on Zhang Congzheng's pathogen-attacking theory), advancing views such as "disease arises from pathogens, and only attacking pathogens can dispel disease" and the idea that a "method of unblocking" runs through the eight therapeutic methods; the case records and talks section draws on decades of clinical records and folk experience, mostly recording the reasoning, formula selection, and outcomes for acute, severe, and difficult cases across internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, and stomatology; the final section compiles ancestral proven formulas. Combining theory and practice, tracing sources and following currents, and explaining the profound in simple terms, the book has a distinct regional medical character of eastern Fujian and is of considerable reference value for TCM clinicians studying the diagnostic reasoning and formula use of a renowned physician. Because it was published early and in a limited print run, the book now circulates mainly on the secondhand market and in electronic document collections.
Editor's review
