Summary

Cases of Judge Bao (Bao Gong An), also known as Longtu Gong An and fully titled Jingben Tongsu Yanyi Baolongtu Bajia Gong'an Quanzhuan, is a court-case novel of the Ming Dynasty telling stories of Judge Bao solving cases. Compiled by An Yushi in ten volumes, it is in fact a collection of short stories about Bao Gong, with each chapter recounting one case he adjudicated. Although the contents are not continuous, the image of Bao Gong runs through the entire book. Like other court-case novels, Bao Gong An also originated from the circulation of folk stories.

Editor's review

As the crowning work of classical Chinese legal-case fiction, Cases of Judge Bao takes the Northern Song statesman Bao Zheng as its prototype and, through a series of dramatic case-solving stories, constructs a judicial world that combines realistic concern with idealistic coloring. Compared with works of the same period such as The Three Heroes and Five Gallants, this book focuses more on tracing the judicial process and probing the subtleties of human nature than on chivalric legend pure and simple. Its cases are various, from private property disputes to palace political plots, displaying the living conditions and legal practice of every stratum of Song society. As a literary text, its narrative structure is somewhat formulaic, yet it is precisely this stable 'receive case—investigate—judge' pattern that established the basic paradigm of later legal-case fiction and reflects the common people's plain expectation of judicial fairness. In terms of reading value, the book is not only a window onto ancient judicial culture and folk imagination; its investigative logic and interrogation techniques also offer modern readers insight into how traditional Chinese society resolved disputes. Note that some episodes carry obvious folk-legend coloring and notions of karmic retribution, which should be read with historical context in mind.

Are the stories in Cases of Judge Bao real historical events?
Although the book takes the historical figure Bao Zheng as its prototype, its content is mostly a compilation and re-creation of folk legends and opera stories from the Song and Yuan onward; it is a work of literary fiction and should not be used as strict historical source material.
Do different editions of Cases of Judge Bao differ greatly in content?
Extant Ming and Qing editions differ in the number and order of stories; common editions contain roughly 60 to 100 tales, and core cases such as 'The Black Basin Case' and 'The Civet Cat Exchanged for the Crown Prince' are mostly retained.
What are the characteristics of the legal concepts reflected in the book?
It highlights the reconciliation of 'heavenly principle—state law—human feeling', values investigative methods and psychological contest, and is deeply influenced by karmic retribution, with supernatural elements often intervening in the resolution of cases.

About the author

安遇时 Author

An Yushi is the compiler of the Ming dynasty case-fiction collection Bao Gong An (also known as Longtu Gong'an). His life is not recorded in historical sources, and public information on his nationality and dates of birth and death is limited. The fourteen works held in the collection all revolve around the cases judged by Bao Zheng, including divided volumes of Bao Gong An, a vernacular edition, and the Longtu Gong'an series. These works present stories of investigation and judgment in the form of linked short tales, with tight plots that make use of suspense and coincidence and a plain, accessible style bearing clear traces of popular storytelling. The Bao Gong they portray is upright and perceptive, embodying ordinary people's hopes for fair justice. The book circulated widely and provided material for later plays and novels about Bao Gong, occupying an important place in classical Chinese case fiction and serving as a common source for understanding popular ideas of justice and narrative traditions.
