The Organization of Labour

Summary
Editor's review
Rereading this book from a contemporary perspective, its value lies not only in its significance as a historical landmark in thought. Blanc's analysis of "competition as oppression," his early insight into labor alienation, and his argument treating economic democracy as the foundation of political democracy remain instructive today. Although his specific proposals bear utopian features, the book's conceptions of state intervention in the economy, protection of labor rights, and development of cooperative economy in fact anticipated many later practices of European social legislation and the cooperative movement. The Commercial Press translation is rigorous and reliable, with relevant historical documents included in the appendix, helping readers situate Blanc's contributions and limitations within the intellectual context.
When reading, note that Blanc's exposition is rooted in the social context of early industrial-revolution France; his optimistic rationalism and trust in the state should be understood against the background of 19th-century socialism before it had undergone complex practical tests. The book is not an operational manual but a blueprint for social transformation full of moral fervor; its true strength lies in its relentless questioning of economic justice.

About the author
Louis Blanc was an important nineteenth-century French socialist thinker and political activist. His representative work, The Organization of Labour, sets out his ideas for social reform. In it he criticizes the poverty and disorder brought about by capitalist competition and argues that the state should organize labour, establish social workshops, and guarantee workers' employment and right to subsistence, so that labour becomes a respected social function. This conception bears a clear utopian socialist character, yet it supplied intellectual material for later discussions of the right to work and of social legislation. Blanc's writing is above all argumentative; he starts from real suffering and proposes institutional solutions, in plain and stirring language. His doctrines spread for a time within the workers' movement and influenced the evolution of European socialist thought. One of his works, The Organization of Labour, is held in this collection under social sciences. Public information on the details of his life and education is limited, so no conjecture is offered here.
