Summary

This book covers an overview of animation, animation production tools, editor commands, simple animation production, property animation production, scene animation production, and animation case production. Through studying this book, students can master the knowledge and practical application of animation production.

Editor's review

Published by Chongqing University Electronic Audio-Visual Publishing House, Animation Production is written by Chen Rui, a relatively experienced practitioner in the field of animation education in China. The book is positioned as introductory and basic practical teaching in animation production, covering the core production workflows of both traditional two-dimensional animation and digital animation. It addresses hand-drawn original art, in-between drawing, and coloring as well as digital animation software operation, rigging, and rendering output, giving it a relatively complete structure.

From a professional perspective, the book's strength lies in combining traditional animation principles with digital tools to help beginners understand the essential laws of animated motion. It offers accessible explanations of the twelve principles of animation, accompanied by step-by-step diagrams that lower the barrier to understanding. However, as a textbook published around 2010, some software operation interfaces and cases may appear somewhat dated, and readers need to transfer the knowledge to current mainstream software (such as Adobe Animate and Toon Boom).

The book's reading value is mainly reflected in three aspects: first, it provides readers with absolutely no prior foundation a systematic framework of animation knowledge; second, through case breakdowns it demonstrates the complete production logic from storyboard to finished film; third, it emphasizes the dual aesthetic and technical attributes of animation as an "art of motion." For readers who wish to understand the full picture of animation production or who are engaged in related basic teaching, the book still has good reference value. But if readers are seeking the latest software techniques or advanced special effects production, they will need to supplement it with more cutting-edge professional materials.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • First- and second-year students majoring in animation and related fields who wish to build a systematic foundational knowledge framework
  • Amateur enthusiasts interested in animation production with zero foundation who want to understand the complete production process
  • Primary and secondary school art or information technology teachers looking for reference materials for introductory animation teaching
  • People engaged in short video or new media content creation who need to supplement basic animation knowledge

Not a good fit for

  • Professional animators seeking the latest industry software techniques or advanced special effects solutions
  • Academic researchers hoping to study animation theory or art history in depth

Reading tips

  1. It is recommended to read through the first two chapters on animation principles first to build a basic understanding of the laws of motion, then move on to the practical chapters
  2. When practicing, try completing simple movements with the book's traditional drawing methods first, then reproduce them with digital tools to understand the differences
  3. Supplement with online video tutorials to watch dynamic demonstrations, especially the parts on timelines and keyframe operation

FAQ

Is this book suitable for someone who has never studied drawing?
The first few chapters include explanations of basic drawing techniques, but if you have no drawing foundation at all, it is advisable to first practice sketching and rapid drawing, otherwise you will encounter difficulties in later original art creation.
Is the software used in the book outdated now?
The textbook uses software such as Flash as examples; its core animation logic still applies to current mainstream tools, but readers need to learn and transfer the specific interfaces and functions to new software themselves.
Can this book help me independently complete an animated short film?
It can help you understand the complete process, but actual production requires more specialized training (such as scripting and voice acting), so it is best used as a process guide rather than the only tutorial.
