Summary

A vast world full of wonders.

I, Chen Ping'an, have but one sword—one that can move mountains, sever rivers, overturn seas, subdue demons, suppress devils, command gods, pluck stars, shatter cities, and cleave the heavens!

My name is Chen Ping'an—Ping'an as in peace and safety—and I am a swordsman.

I travel the Northern Wasteland, challenge the Zhengyang Mountain to a sword duel, journey to the Dali Imperial City, and reach the Savage Wilds.

I slay great demons, settle old scores, meet old friends, and return home.

Inscribing words upon the Sword Qi Great Wall, Chen Ping'an reopens the Qingping Sword Sect!

Editor's review

At thirty-five volumes, this work is less a single story than a slowly unfolding jianghu city-state: Chen Ping'an rises from a boy in Mudbottle Alley, travels to Beiju Luzhou, challenges Zhengyang Mountain to a sword duel, visits the Dali imperial city, reaches the wildlands, slays demons and settles grievances, reunites with old friends and returns home, and finally carves his name on the Sword Qi Great Wall and founds the Qingping Sword Sect. Its appeal lies not in any single thrill of combat but in the long cultivation of relationships and the反复 pull between rules, reason, and human feeling. The narrator often sets homely detail beside grand spectacle, and readers must settle into its rhythm to feel the restraint and responsibility behind “only one sword.” It suits readers willing to commit long-term and who enjoy ensemble casts and world-building; those seeking quick, punchy leveling may be slowed by the many side plots and digressions. Read volume by volume, pausing at major duels and homecoming turns to sort out character motives before moving on.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Readers who love long xianxia and are willing to invest time in an ensemble cast and world-building
  • Readers who appreciate everyday digressions alongside jianghu rules and are in no hurry
  • Veteran readers fond of traditional xianxia elements such as the Sword Qi Great Wall and sect grudges
  • Those curious about long-term character growth and relationship-building rather than a single upgrade thread

Not a good fit for

  • Readers seeking fast, punchy leveling with strong conflict in every chapter
  • Those impatient with abundant side plots and digressions, who may abandon the book midway
  • Readers who want only single-protagonist combat and will not follow ensemble threads

Reading tips

  1. Read volume by volume; after each, review the main relationships and unresolved grudges before continuing
  2. Slow down through digression-heavy passages and treat them as groundwork for character and world rather than padding
  3. Take brief notes at duels, homecomings, and sect-founding turns to avoid confusing character threads over a long read

FAQ

Where's the best place to start with thirty-five volumes?
Starting from volume one in order is safest. The story is built around Chen Ping'an's growth and travels, with relationships, grudges and sect threads piling up layer by layer; skipping around easily loses the causal chains. If you just want to sample it, read volume one to get a feel for the pacing and worldview before committing.
Can a newcomer to xianxia get into it?
Yes, but it takes some patience. The world and cast are large, with extensive early setup, and familiar xianxia elements unfold gradually with the plot. Don't rush for fight density—first follow the protagonist's daily life and travels to build the relationships, then move into the broader jianghu.
Why do many people say the pacing is slow?
Because the work values relationships, rules and human ties, and world detail, often advancing through daily digressions and subplots rather than a strong conflict in every chapter. Over a long read this accumulates emotion and causality, but for readers used to fast-paced leveling it's a barrier. Reading by volume and slowing down helps.

About the author

烽火戏诸侯 Author · China · 1985

Fenghuo Xi Zhuhou, whose real name is Chen Zhenghua, was born in 1985 in Chun'an, Hangzhou, Zhejiang. He is a member of the China Writers Association and currently serves as chairman of the Zhejiang Network Writers Association. Since 2005 he has been writing online literature on Qidian, and his representative works include The Wicked Life of Chen Ergou, Sword Snow Stride, and Jian Lai, with 48 titles held in the collection. His writing often draws on wuxia and otherworldly-continent themes, weaving together the intrigues of the jianghu and the imperial court with the solitary courage of youthful growth; his style is distinctive and his plotting full of tension. Sword Snow Stride has been adapted into a television drama of the same name starring Zhang Ruoyun and Li Gengxi, and other works have been adapted into animation, giving him wide influence among readers and viewers alike.
