Summary

Assassins may be one of the world's oldest professions. From Cao Mo, who held a dagger to Duke Huan of Qi and forced him to return the lost territory of Lu, to Zhuan Zhu, who hid a sword in a fish belly and assassinated King Liao of Wu; from Yu Rang, who, in the belief that "a true man dies for one who understands him," made three failed attempts on the life of Zhao Xiangzi, to Jing Ke, whose "map unrolled to reveal the dagger" in a failed attempt on the life of King Zheng of Qin; from Zhang Wenxiang's assassination of Ma Xinyi, which became a notorious unsolved case of the late Qing, to Wu Yue, who splattered the blood of the Five Ministers and gave his life for his country... Across the vast sweep of history, they have traced a tragic and heroic hue in their own unique ways.

Editor's review

Although commonly associated with Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian, Assassins is not an original text from the Shiji; it is a work of military history compiled by Tong Chao and published in the "Big History of China" series. The book examines the men in ancient China who staked their lives on their convictions—from well-known figures such as Zhuan Zhu, Yu Rang, Nie Zheng, and Jing Ke, to many tragic figures largely absent from standard histories—offering a systematic survey and reinterpretation. It is not mere storytelling. Tong Chao, a historian at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, places these lives within broader historical currents and social structures. Its value lies in moving beyond the simple moral judgment of "scholars dying for those who understood them," guiding readers to consider the political struggles, social ethics, and spirit of the age that produced these assassins. The selection and analysis of historical sources demonstrate scholarly rigor, while the writing combines academic precision with readability, bringing distant figures to life; the helplessness, resolve, and idealism behind their choices invite modern readers to reflect on loyalty, duty, and personal worth. A book that offers historical insight and humanistic reflection alongside its gripping stories.
