Summary

The so-called Cold Land was originally a world without light. Opposite the Cold Land lies another world of brightness: the Cloud Realm. All the people of the Cold Land are exiles from the Cloud Realm. Yet the Cold Land was not always a place of pitch-black darkness. Those exiled there invented science and technology, and invented electricity and light. In time, the once barren world of the Cold Land, because its rulers encouraged every kind of creativity, came to display extraordinary technological capability. In the Cold Land, all imagination and exploration are encouraged; desire is encouraged, and there is no fixed standard of taste. The Cloud Realm is the opposite: its rulers do not encourage innovation and impose the aesthetic sensibilities of the ruling class itself as the law of the world; those who violate that law are exiled to the Cold Land. Thus the people of the Cloud Realm grow fewer and fewer, while the people of the Cold Land gather in ever greater numbers. Over time, the balance of power between the two worlds shifted. When the rulers of the Cold Land believed they had gathered sufficient strength, they would attempt to open the door to the Cloud Realm and try to reclaim the bright world that was theirs. That is exactly what happened twenty-six hundred years ago, and the outcome of that history was the defeat of the masses of the Cold Land and their being driven back to the Cold Land once more. Twenty-six hundred years later, the rulers of the Cold Land are once again stirring, but this time not everyone is willing to return to the Cloud Realm; some have long grown accustomed to this world. Thus contradictions intensify, and the book's plot unfolds against this background.

Editor's review

Cold Land is the latest novel by young writer Wang Yishu, published by Jiuzhou Press. The work has received a score of around 8.0 on Douban, indicating readers' recognition of its literary quality and intellectual depth. The novel is set in a fictional geographical space called "Cold Land," but its core directly addresses the spiritual predicament and existential reflections of modern people. Wang Yishu's writing is calm and restrained, with a steady narrative pace, constructing a textual world that is both alienated and rich in symbolic meaning.

From an editorial perspective, the novel's value lies in its unique literary temperament and philosophical reflection. It is not a story pursuing plot twists but rather a deep exploration of loneliness, memory, identity, and belonging. The author excels at creating a cool, clear atmosphere that permeates the book through delicate environmental descriptions and characters' inner monologues; this atmosphere itself becomes a powerful narrative language. The characters' wandering and choices in "Cold Land" metaphorically represent the universal struggle of contemporary individuals seeking coordinates of meaning in a rapidly changing society.

The work's literariness is a prominent highlight. The language is carefully polished, and the imagery is rich and layered, demonstrating the author's solid writing skills and aesthetic pursuit. It may not offer immediate reading pleasure but can bring lasting resonance and reflection. For readers who prefer pure literature and value textual aesthetics and spiritual exploration, Cold Land is a literary answer worth reading with patience. It reminds us that beyond the noise, literature still retains the power to gaze into the abyss and question the soul.
