Summary
Editor's review
Especially compelling is the book’s discussion of “detail” and “a sense of truth.” Ye Kai believes that good writing comes from meticulous observation of life and honest recording, not from piling up flowery language. Through a large number of classic literary works and examples from his own writing, he analyzes how to capture and present those moments that truly move people. For readers who often feel they “have nothing to write” or “cannot express what they mean,” this part is highly inspiring.
In addition, the author’s reflections on writing training in primary and secondary school Chinese education are also particularly insightful. He points out the drawbacks of much formulaic writing instruction and proposes approaches for improvement that are closer to the essence of creation. This makes the book not only suitable for literature lovers and writers, but also of important reference value to educators and parents. Overall, Writing Lessons is a work that can help readers “break out of the cocoon.” It aims to dismantle fear and misunderstanding about writing and to reshape a healthier, more confident, and more creative view of writing. Reading it is more like being led by a wise and patient mentor to rediscover the power of words and the pleasure of writing.

About the author
Ye Kai, whose real name is Liao Zenghu, was born in 1969 in Lianjiang, Guangdong. He holds a doctorate in literature and serves as director of the editorial department and associate senior editor at the journal Harvest; he is also a member of the China Writers Association. His writing spans literary creation, literary research and language education: he has published novels such as Dry Mouth and Dry Tongue and The Biography of My Eighth Uncle, as well as substantial studies of Mo Yan, including A Critical Biography of Mo Yan and Mo Yan's Literary Republic. In recent years he has addressed a wider readership with books on Chinese language education and writing methods, such as Fighting Chinese, This Is the Best Chinese Textbook in China, Writing Lessons and Mastering Good Writing: Everyone Can Write Brilliantly, and he touches on management topics in Social Media Operations. Three of his works are held in the collection, covering examination, literary appreciation and management categories.
