Tang Guizhang (1901–1990) was a Chinese ci scholar, literary historian, and educator from Nanjing, Jiangsu. He devoted more than seventy years to the study of ci. He is best known for compiling the Complete Song Ci on his own, and he also edited the Complete Jin and Yuan Ci and the Compendium of Remarks on Ci, and wrote such works as Four Studies on Song Ci, A Brief Annotation of Tang and Song Ci, and Essays on Ci Scholarship. His work focused on collecting, collating, and theoretically organizing ci texts, and also touched on literary appreciation. He is ranked with Xia Chengtao and Long Yusheng as one of the three great masters of contemporary ci scholarship. This site carries three of his works, including the Complete Jin and Yuan Ci, the New Edition of the Dictionary of Song Ci Appreciation, and the Prosody of Yuan Sanqu, covering ancient poetry, literary appreciation, and Eastern philosophy, which shows that his research combined textual organization with accessible reading.
