Summary
Every woman of some beauty in the city has had a romantic dalliance with him.
When she married the Fourth Young Master, Jin Xiao was still a self-conscious, sensitive girl, overlooked at home and wholly inexperienced in the ways of the world.
Everyone said the Fourth Young Master married Jin Xiao, a woman of humble birth, only to make it easier to carry on his philandering outside.
Jin Xiao thought so too. She asked for little—only a haven to stand firm in a troubled world—so she played her part to suit the Fourth Young Master's tastes.
In his presence she feigned cleverness and charm, courting him with deliberate flattery.
The Fourth Young Master saw it all, never once defended himself, and simply, through day after day together, gave her his unreserved favor and doting affection.
At last, in that restless, unstable world, she found her own light.
Editor's review
Who it's for
A good fit for
- Readers who enjoy marriage-first-love-later and slow-burn emotional development
- Readers who prefer stories of mutual reliance amid troubled times
- Romance readers who can accept a self-conscious, sensitive heroine
- Readers who savor emotion built up through everyday detail
Not a good fit for
- Readers expecting strong plot conflict and fast pacing
- Readers uncomfortable with the heroine's deliberate flattery
- Readers who prefer a strong, independent heroine
Reading tips
- The heroine wears a mask a good deal in the early chapters; read patiently to the sections of everyday interaction between the two, where the emotional shifts mainly show themselves in details.
- As you read, notice the hero's behavior—never explaining himself yet continually giving—and set it against the heroine's inner monologue for greater immersion.
- Best read over several sittings, a few chapters at a time, so the slow-burn accumulation of feeling comes through more clearly.

About the author
Winter Cherry is an author about whom very little public information is available; the only confirmed details are the pen name and a single work. According to library records, Winter Cherry has only one book to date, the representative work Doing a Play (Zuoxi), which is classified under the time-travel and alternate-world category. Because there are no reliable records of the author's nationality, dates of birth and death, English name, or writing career, it is difficult to sketch a personal profile, and the present introduction can only focus on the work itself. Doing a Play is set against a time-travel and alternate-world backdrop, a genre that typically uses temporal displacement or invented worlds as a narrative stage, with characters acting and forming emotional entanglements in unfamiliar surroundings. The title itself also suggests themes of performance, disguise, or identity transformation. Overall, Winter Cherry's writing profile awaits further material; readers interested in the author and the work may begin with this known book and consider its approach to alternate-world storytelling.
