Summary

As a child, Xu Yaozhi suffered a fever that left her mind impaired. Her family abandoned her deep in the mountains, where she met a reclusive Daoist master and gained the power to bring good fortune by drawing talismans. There she unknowingly saved the male lead after he was drugged; taken as the antidote, she lost her innocence to him. When she was five months pregnant, her biological father tracked her down and forced her to marry a crippled old man. Eager to investigate her mother's death, Xu Yaozhi feigned foolishness and agreed to the match. The male lead, Huo Qingzhi, has been reborn and deliberately engineered this marriage, because in his past life he failed the woman who loved him so deeply, and in this life he means to repay her a hundredfold.

Editor's review

As the middle volume of "Dotingly Spoiled," this installment serves as a bridge, carrying forward the marriage plot and the mystery of Xu Yaozhi's origins laid out in the first volume and pushing them toward deeper entanglement. Beyond the Daoist fortune-bringing premise, author Zhi Yue focuses on the dual psychological game between the leads—the hero's "rebirth and recompense" and the heroine's "feigned foolishness as a test." Huo Qingzhi maneuvers step by step, driven by the debt he owes from his past life, while Xu Yaozhi, beneath her foolish facade, secretly investigates her mother's death. The interweaving of these two motive lines generates dense tension. The middle volume's appeal lies in the simultaneous warming of the relationship and the closing in of the truth: readers get both the sweetness of emotional progress and the momentum of household intrigue and investigative suspense. It is best read right after finishing the first volume; as the series' midpoint, it functions as an acceleration, building force for the explosion to come in the final volume.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Series readers who have finished the first volume and want to see the leads' relationship deepen
  • Romance readers who enjoy the reborn-recompense premise and the double game of a heroine feigning foolishness
  • Web-fiction fans who like a mix of Daoist fortune-bringing, household intrigue, and investigation
  • Readers comfortable with serialized mid-series pacing and binge-reading

Not a good fit for

  • Readers who have not read the first volume and want a standalone book
  • Realistic-fiction readers with no interest in rebirth or Daoist premises
  • Readers who prefer completed single volumes and dislike following a series midpoint

Reading tips

  1. Finish the first volume before starting this one, so character motives and the marriage background connect smoothly.
  2. While reading, watch for the switches between Xu Yaozhi's "feigned foolishness" and "investigation" threads to appreciate her dual nature.
  3. Readers interested in the reborn-recompense arc may take notes comparing Huo Qingzhi's behavior in his past and present lives.
  4. If a long time has passed since the last installment, skim the final chapters of the first volume before starting to quickly recall the relationships and unresolved hooks.

FAQ

Can I skip the first volume and read the middle one directly?
Not recommended. The middle volume picks up directly from the first volume's marriage plot and origin mystery; character motives, the Daoist premise, and the leads' dual psychology all rest on the earlier groundwork. Skipping ahead can easily leave you confused about key developments such as why she feigns foolishness and why the marriage was engineered. Reading in order is best.
What story threads does the middle volume mainly advance?
From the available material, the middle volume continues two main lines—Xu Yaozhi's investigation of her mother's death and Huo Qingzhi's reborn recompense—while advancing how the two interact and test each other within the marriage. As the series midpoint, it emphasizes deepening the relationship and heightening suspense, setting up the final volume's revelation and emotional payoff.
Will unfamiliarity with Daoist fortune-bringing premises affect my understanding?
Not much. The fortune-bringing skill (drawing talismans to bring good luck) is part of the character's ability set, and the author explains its use and limits within the narrative. Readers can follow the plot without any background in Daoist lore—just treat it as the heroine's special ability.

About the author

枝月 Author

Zhiyue is an author writing in the field of modern romance. Publicly available information about her is limited: her nationality, dates of birth and death, and English name are not clearly recorded. The library holds four of her works, including the three-volume set of Pian Chong (Favored) and the separate volumes Pian Chong (Part One), Pian Chong (Part Two), and Pian Chong (Part Three), which suggests that her writing mainly takes the form of a single story presented in complete, multi-part volumes. Judging from its classification, Zhiyue's work belongs to modern romance, focusing on emotional relationships set against a contemporary backdrop, with narratives that unfold around the interactions and developing feelings between characters. Because verifiable information is scarce, a fuller account of her life and overall body of work is difficult to give; based on the works available, however, Zhiyue has made an impression on modern romance readers through the Pian Chong series, and her writing is characterized chiefly by serialized, multi-volume long-form storytelling.
