Summary

Why is everyone talking about family of origin? Why are divorce rates climbing? Why is midlife so exhausting? Why do we drift apart from our children? Why are workplace relationships so complicated? Why can love itself cause pain? In this book, we join Professor Wu Jun in studying Wang Yangming's thought, using clear, accessible logic to dissect the root causes of these problems and vivid cases to explain how the philosophy of mind applies to daily life—so that through simple learning, we can attain a freer way of living.

Editor's review

Mind Cultivation is Dr. Wu Jun's third book on personal growth, following Insights and Attitude. Unlike the many concept-heavy "inspirational" titles on the market, its distinctive value lies in placing the seemingly mysterious process of "mind cultivation" within the context of the information age and breaking it down through reason, logic, and systematic engineering thinking. Drawing on his broad vision spanning technology and the humanities, Wu Jun argues that amid algorithmic recommendation, information overload, and fast-paced living, modern people need inner steadiness and clear judgment more than ever. This book does not teach readers to escape reality; rather, it offers a methodology for building a strong, stable, and resilient inner order through deep interaction with the world. Its content distills Eastern and Western philosophical wisdom, integrates contemporary research in psychology and cognitive science, and weaves in the author's own cross-disciplinary life experience as a top scientist, investor, and writer. What you gain from this book is not momentary emotional comfort but a set of thinking tools for long-term practice—tools to improve decision quality, cope with complexity, and preserve inner calm. It is especially suited to those who have already achieved success in their professional field yet feel stuck in their inner growth and long to advance further in depth of thought and breadth of life.

Who it's for

  • People overwhelmed by the information flood who long to build a personal system for filtering information and making judgments
  • Readers who appreciate Dr. Wu Jun's earlier works and wish to continue exploring his intellectual system

Not a good fit for

  • Readers seeking simple, quick emotional-regulation techniques or spiritual experiences
  • Readers impatient with systematic, reason-oriented approaches to personal growth

Reading tips

  1. Reading this book as a series with Wu Jun's Insights and Attitude, in order, will give you a better grasp of how his thinking has evolved
  2. As you read, reflect on specific confusions or decisions you face and try applying the book's analytical frameworks
  3. There is no need to rush through it; after each chapter, pause to reflect and digest, or even put it into practice for a while before continuing

FAQ

How does this book differ from Wu Jun's earlier Insights and Attitude?
Insights focuses on worldview and breadth of vision, Attitude on philosophy of conduct and advice, while Mind Cultivation goes deep into building inner order, exploring more systematically how to maintain steadiness, clarity, and resilience in a complex world—the most inward and metaphysical part of the trilogy.
Is the content abstract and hard to understand?
Wu Jun's writing is consistently clear and concrete. Though the themes are profound, he excels at using specific cases from technology, business, and history to explain abstract concepts, and he offers many actionable thinking exercises, lowering the barrier to understanding.
Can I understand this book without a background in philosophy or psychology?
Absolutely. The book is meant to offer practical mental tools for modern people, not an academic treatise. The author turns profound principles into a guide ordinary readers can understand and apply in plain language, with no prior knowledge required.
