Summary

This volume is the Treatise on Cold Damage fascicle of the Advanced Series in Chinese Medicine, edited by Professor Xiong Manqi of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and written jointly by specialists in cold-damage studies from nearly ten Chinese medical colleges and research institutions; the second edition was revised from the first edition of 2000. The whole book takes as its base text the Annotated Treatise on Cold Damage edited by Professor Liu Duzhou from the Ming dynasty Zhao Kaimei reproduction of the Song edition, and is divided into two parts. The upper part expounds the original text in ten chapters, arranged by the Greater Yang disease (in three chapters, upper, middle, and lower), Yang Brightness disease, Lesser Yang disease, Greater Yin disease, Lesser Yin disease, Reverting Yin disease, cholera disease, and the disease of yin-yang exchange with relapse from overexertion after recovery. Each pattern is provided with the original text, word explanations, summary, interpretation, selected commentaries, evaluation, treatment method, formulas and herbs, formula meaning, selected discussions of formulas, commentary, clinical application, notes, and modern research, placing each passage within the readings of commentators through the ages and in today's clinical practice. The lower part has four chapters: differentiation of analogous patterns, differentiation of analogous formulas, differentiation of medicinals, and topical studies, forming a framework of cross-cutting comparison from the differentiation of patterns, symptoms, pulses, and tongue images to the comparative use of formulas and herbs and then to topical scholarly surveys. Formula and passage indexes at the end facilitate reference. The second edition has screened and supplemented the sections on clinical application and modern research, added some topical studies, and revised controversial or nonstandard points in the first edition, reflecting the current state of cold-damage scholarship; it is suitable as a reference and desk book for systematic study of the Treatise on Cold Damage.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
