Summary

This book is an important reference for studying and implementing comprehensive reform and was selected as a key thematic publication of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee in 2018. Taking the overall context of social development as its standpoint, it comprehensively reviews and recreates the changes in Chinese society over the 40 years of reform and opening up, especially since the 18th National Congress. Drawing on a series of key, hot and difficult issues in the theory and practice of 40 years of reform and opening up, as well as discussions on reform and opening up, it seeks to present in an all-round, multi-perspective and three-dimensional way the great course and valuable experience of our Party and country over those 40 years, and has considerable research and theoretical value. In 2018 China marked the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up, an important moment for summing up experience and continuing to deepen reform and opening up. From multiple dimensions such as history, achievements and experience, the book presents the great panorama of reform and opening up in three dimensions and fully displays the new achievements of the 40-year course, especially since the 18th National Congress of the Party, comprehensively answering the major question of "why reform and opening up is called great." The book thoroughly implements the General Secretary's speeches on comprehensively deepening reform, fully demonstrates the great achievements of 40 years of reform and opening up, and deepens understanding that reform and opening up is the crucial move that determines the fate of contemporary China. It is an important work for comprehensively interpreting reform and opening up in the new era.

Editor's review

The Great Reform and Opening Up is a solid and insightful work in the recent study of Party history and the history of reform and opening up. Author Professor Luo Pinghan, director of the Party History Teaching and Research Department at the Central Party School, draws on deep scholarship and rigorous method to sketch a sweeping yet finely detailed historical canvas of reform and opening up. The book is not a simple listing of events or policy advocacy; it probes the texture of history, systematically explaining why reform and opening up is "great" from multiple dimensions: the origins of ideological emancipation, the tortuous process of key decisions, and vivid cases of grassroots practice. Its value lies in addressing not only "what we did" but also "why we made these choices" and "what deep changes those choices brought." Its analyses of several major historical junctures, such as the discussion of the criterion of truth, the establishment of special economic zones and the creation of the socialist market economy, cite rich archival documents and participants' recollections, showing the unity of complexity and inevitability in the historical process. For readers who wish to go beyond simple conclusions and truly understand the internal logic and driving forces of contemporary China's development, this book offers rare in-depth narrative and scholarly support. It is an excellent work that combines academic seriousness with intellectual stimulation, helping readers grasp more clearly, within history's depth, the connection between the nation's fate and their own.

  • Readers expecting a wholly critical or alternative interpretation of reform and opening up

Reading tips

  1. Readers may combine specific chapters, such as those on rural reform or special zone construction, with relevant documentaries or interviews with participants to enhance the sense of historical presence.
  2. While reading, note how the author threads the theme of "ideological emancipation" throughout, and consider how conceptual change drove practical breakthroughs.
  3. The book involves many meetings, documents and figures; taking notes to sort out the timeline and key junctures can help build a clearer historical framework.
