Summary

A romance of evenly matched push-and-pull, the thrills of court intrigue, and the shocking truth behind a bizarre murder case!

A immortal appears in a dream to name the killer—true or false?

Can two clear-eyed sisters find their high-voltage love happy endings?

Legend has it that a cultivator from a former dynasty ascended to immortality at the Qingtian Pagoda. Remote and long neglected, the place is usually deserted.

At some point, a rumor began to spread through the streets: the immortal who ascended at the Qingtian Pagoda visits dreams upon the common people—those with grievances that cannot be fairly judged in this world may climb the pagoda and submit an Immortal's Petition, to be adjudicated by the immortal and justice done.

Qingtan, who believes in neither ghosts nor gods, decides to help her master catch this "immortal," uncover his true face, and see who he really is and what mischief he is up to.

The "immortal" wears many disguises; Qingtan peels them off one layer at a time.

Editor's review

Xianren Zhuang braids suspenseful detective work together with court intrigue, and its core hook is the folk rumor of "an immortal judging cases through dreams": the Qingtian Pagoda stands remote and sparsely visited, yet word suddenly spreads that submitting a petition there can redress grievances. The heroine, Qingtan, believes in neither ghosts nor gods and resolves to help her master track down this "immortal," launching a probe that peels away layer after layer. The author, Jin Zai, emphasizes an evenly matched push-and-pull in the romantic line, with the two sisters' storylines advancing in parallel—there is both a clear-eyed, restrained emotional game and suspenseful reversals as the case moves forward. The book's readability lies in its brisk pace and dense trail of clues, making it suitable for readers who want both the pleasure of deduction and emotional tension in a single volume. One caveat: the setup involving immortal manifestations and petition-based case judging should be taken as a fictionalized suspense device rather than real-world logic; readers should also be patient with the complexity of the court-intrigue thread. Overall, this is a mass-market light suspense romance, suited to relaxed reading.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Readers who enjoy suspenseful detective fiction blended with romance
  • Female readers drawn to evenly matched romantic lines and dual-strong leads
  • Readers looking for a brisk, page-turning leisure read

Not a good fit for

  • Readers seeking strict honkaku mystery with perfectly fair clues
  • Those with low tolerance for supernatural setups such as dream visitations by immortals
  • Readers hoping for weighty historical research or a serious court drama

Reading tips

  1. At the start, fix in mind Qingtan and her master's investigative goal, and read on with the question "Who is the immortal?" to better catch the clues.
  2. The romance and case threads advance alternately; at turning points, pause briefly and look back at earlier foreshadowing.
  3. If the court figures' relationships become confusing, jot down each faction's stance before continuing.
  4. Best read continuously; fragmented reading easily loses the coherence of the case clues.

FAQ

Is this book pure romance or more suspense?
Both. The case investigation forms the backbone of the main plot, the romance runs through it, and court intrigue supplies background tension. Readers who prefer a single genre need to accept the interweaving of two threads.
Is the "immortal's dream visitation" a genuine supernatural setup?
From the synopsis, the heroine Qingtan does not believe in ghosts or gods and actively investigates the "immortal's" true identity; the story tends to treat dream-based case judging as a mystery to be exposed, so readers can approach it in a puzzle-solving frame of mind.
Can I read this directly without having read the author's previous works?
Yes. This is a standalone story that does not depend on earlier works. Just follow the investigative motive established at the opening and you can read smoothly.
Is it suitable for light bedtime reading?
The pace is fast and the suspense dense, making it easy to want to keep turning pages. If you only want a short relax, it is advisable to limit the number of chapters to avoid staying up late chasing clues.
