Notes on Humanity
Tags
Summary
In the past, we have looked back on the past and touched history and interpreted humanity along the lines of cultural memory, the rise and fall of empires, and the course of civilization. This book is different. Taking human survival and the survival resources it requires as its central axis, and focusing on the evolution of intelligence, the forms in which survival resources exist and their evolution, the patterned movements of humanity around survival resources, relations of interest, interest groups and their evolution, and drawing on the vast existing records of human history, it tastes and chronicles—through a distinctive lens now vast and boundless, now finely detailed—the whole course of humanity's arduous journey from remotest antiquity to the founding of the United Nations: its gatherings and partings, loves and hatreds, successes and failures, rises and falls, and transformations.
It discovers with wonder the mysterious role played in human survival by instinct, nature, and reason. It then offers a careful reading of the great events that have occurred in human history: humanity's goals, the direction of history, the formation of power, the emergence of gods, the birth of religion, the great migrations, the evolution of culture, the rise and fall of empires, the awakening of civilization, the decay of instinct, the rampancy of nature, and the growth of reason—taking us along to experience the interconnectedness of humanity's shared destiny, and presenting a humanistic discourse that brims with historical feeling and is grounded in fairness.
