Summary
It recreates the Silk Road. In the early Qing, as China's ancient silk civilization moved toward prosperity, another overland international trade route arose: centered on Shanxi and Zhili, it crossed the Great Wall northward, traversed the grasslands, gobi, and deserts, passed through Kulun (present-day Ulaanbaatar) to Kyakhta, and on into Russian Siberia, reaching deep into Europe at St. Petersburg and Moscow. In this era of peace and recovery, trade goods were abundant, capital accumulated rapidly, merchants' status rose, and the tea trade flourished as never before, revealing the beautiful landscapes and cultural products of more than twenty provinces and cities, including Beijing, Inner Mongolia, and Shanxi. It is at once a geography of mountains and rivers and a history of the trade routes.
It celebrates merchants' devotion to the nation. Breaking free from the conventional tropes of wealthy merchant families—ruthless profiteering, concubines vying for favor, and heirs fighting over property—it binds the Confucian merchant's pursuits closely to the fate of the nation. Emperor Shunzhi personally conferred the title of Eight Great Imperial Merchants of Shanxi; Emperor Kangxi, learning from the fall of the Ming, corrected the abuses of the early Qing and united merchants and people in the shared responsibility of prospering the economy and safeguarding the state. They threw themselves into the great national affairs of pacifying the Three Feudatories, recovering Taiwan, campaigning against Galdan, weathering natural disasters, and resisting Japanese pirates. In valuing righteousness over profit and choosing righteousness over gain, they enact life's law of exchange and grow in the wisdom and integrity of Confucian merchants. It is at once an epic of family and nation, a book of worldly wisdom, a classic of the middle-way merchant's craft, and a compendium of encyclopedic knowledge.
Editor's review
From a professional editor's perspective, the work's most striking value lies in its balance: it neither sinks into the dusty pedantry of historical fiction nor overfabricates for dramatic effect. The author's research into historical detail is rigorous, striving to recreate everything from clothing and objects to social customs, offering readers an immersive experience. In characterization, the protagonist is no conventional hero but a complex individual surviving in the crevices of the age and making choices amid moral dilemmas; the arc of growth and inner journey is portrayed with particular depth.
Literarily, Jiang Hong's style is steady and restrained, with narrative pacing that alternates tension and ease. The three-volume structure is well designed: the first volume emphasizes the setting of the era and the establishment of relationships, the second rises to the climax of conflict, and the third focuses on the settling of fates and historical reflection. This structure keeps a text of nearly a million characters from feeling long-winded, giving it instead an epic weight.
Particularly noteworthy is the book's distinctive and objective portrayal of the role of commercial civilization in modern China's development, showing both the struggles and enterprise of national industrialists amid turbulent times and unflinchingly confronting their historical limitations. This multi-dimensional historical perspective lifts Jiumo beyond mere storytelling into a literary work worth savoring and pondering. For readers who seek depth, it is undoubtedly a rich spiritual feast.

About the author
Public information about Jiang Hong is limited, and her nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background cannot currently be confirmed. The four works held in the library nonetheless show a remarkably wide range. She is associated with a technical book on the art of 64-bit assembly language programming and with Multimedia Technology and Application Case Tutorial (2nd Edition), indicating experience in computer teaching and engineering practice. She is also linked to a world history title, No Forgiveness, No Future, and is the author of the otherworld fantasy novel Jiu Mo (3 volumes). This combination of technology, history, and fiction suggests a writer who adapts her approach to the subject: the technical works emphasize practical operation and organized knowledge, the history title stresses narrative and reflection, and the novel builds an imaginative and complete world. The available material is insufficient to trace the outline of her life, and her works remain the main way to understand this author.
