Summary

Essentials for Clinical Practice in Chinese Medicine is a clinical reference book by the modern Chinese medicine scholar Qin Bowei (1901–1970), first published in 1963 and later revised; in 2005 it was reissued by People's Medical Publishing House in the 'Reprint Series of Famous Modern Veteran Chinese Medicine Masters' (Series One). The book aims to help readers, after mastering the basic theories of Chinese medicine, learn to apply pattern differentiation and treatment in diagnosing and treating disease in clinical practice. For ease of clinical reference, it divides common clinical presentations by body region into twenty categories—general presentations, head and face presentations, eye presentations, ear presentations, nose presentations, lip presentations, tongue presentations, tooth presentations, throat presentations, neck presentations, shoulder and back presentations, chest, hypochondrium, axilla and breast presentations, lumbar presentations, abdominal and umbilical presentations, limb presentations, hand and foot presentations, anterior yin presentations, posterior yin presentations, internal organ presentations, and gynecological presentations—introducing more than four hundred common clinical presentations. For each presentation it analyzes its different natures in terms of cause and pathogenesis, in conjunction with the four examinations and other concurrent signs, and then lists in detail the corresponding treatments. The presentations are mainly internal medicine, with reference also to gynecology, pediatrics, surgery and the eye and throat specialties; treatments are mainly herbal formulas, with acupuncture, moxibustion and tuina added as appropriate. An appendix, 'A Brief Discussion of Pattern Differentiation and Treatment,' uses actual cases to show how to grasp the principal presentation, investigate the cause, determine the pattern and carry out treatment in clinical practice. The book starts from the analysis of presentations and lands on the integration of principle, method, formula and materia medica; its language is concise and succinct, giving it the function of a clinical handbook. To preserve the original, the reprint leaves terms such as 'presentations' unchanged.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
