Who it's for
A good fit for

- University teachers, students, and researchers studying late nineteenth-century Nordic literature or Finnish literary history
- Language enthusiasts who need free electronic texts for corpus analysis or version comparison
Not a good fit for
- Chinese readers with no knowledge of Finnish who simply want an easy introduction to Nordic stories
- Beginning readers expecting a Chinese translation, detailed annotations, or an introduction
- General fiction readers whose primary goal is entertainment through plot
Reading tips
- Read through once for general understanding, marking unfamiliar words and long sentences, then do a second close reading with a dictionary.
- Read in comparison with other works by Benedictsson, noting how narrative duties were divided in the co-authored work.
- Understand the work in the context of late nineteenth-century Nordic society; reading alongside literary history materials is more effective.
- For language learning, read only one or two pages at a time and keep notes on sentence patterns and vocabulary.

About the author
Axel Lundegård (1861–1930) was a Swedish writer born in Sallerup, Skåne, in 1861 and died in Stockholm in 1930. He is regarded as a representative of Swedish realist literature. He made his literary debut in 1885 with the short-story collection I gryningen (At Dawn), and his writing was influenced by Victoria Benedictsson. Four of his works are held in this collection: Modern: En Berättelse, Den bergtagna: En kärlekens tragedi, Elsa Finne I–II, and Äiti. These works centre on love, fate, and relations between men and women, combining realistic detail with attention to plot and psychological portrayal. Public information about his life and career is limited, and his place in literary history rests chiefly on these novels and short stories.
