About the author
Jean Rameau (1859–1942) was a French poet and novelist whose works are mostly set against rural life and natural scenery. Public information about his life and education is limited; only one of his works, Yan, is held in this collection, and its common classification is not yet available. Judging from the existing introduction, his writing has a distinct regional character, skillfully placing his characters' fates within village settings and natural landscapes. His style tends toward a blend of lyricism and realism, reflecting the interest in local scenery and ordinary people's lives found in French literature from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. This thematic focus gives his work a certain representative place in the tradition of regional literature and offers readers a literary glimpse of rural France in his time.
