Editor's review

This is a short English biography of the Renaissance painter Veronese, written by François Crastre and released free by Project Gutenberg. A popular art-history title, it is concise and centers on the painter's life and work, suited to readers who want a quick overview of this leading figure of the Venetian school. The style is that of an early biographical narrative; information density is fairly high, but it is not an art album and does not rely on high-resolution plates. It is best read with internet access at hand so that paintings mentioned can be searched and compared on the spot, turning verbal description into visual impression. For specialist art historians it works better as an introductory pointer than as deep research material.

Reading tips

About the author

François Crastre Author · French · 1864–1937

François Crastre (1864–1937) was a French art historian and critic. Born in Paris, he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts and the École des Arts Décoratifs. In the early twentieth century he became known for lively, accessible biographies of painters, including Veronese, Bastien-Lepage, Puvis de Chavannes, Rosa Bonheur and Goya. Seven of his works are held in this collection, most of them biographical studies of major Western painters, along with a title on two great cities in Brazil. His writing turns art-historical knowledge into readable narrative for general readers, contributing to the popularization of art in French-language publishing of his time. Because public information is limited, details of his early education and personal life cannot be given in full; this assessment rests on the works and existing profile above.
