About the author
Francis John McConnell (1871–1953) was an American Methodist bishop and one of the representative figures of the Social Gospel movement. He devoted sustained attention to the relationship between Christian faith and social ethics, arguing that Christianity should respond to the real problems of society; his ideas had a certain influence on early twentieth-century American Christian movements for social reform. One of his works is held in this collection, namely Understanding the Scriptures. On the available evidence, the book is addressed to general readers and aims to help them understand the content and meaning of the Bible, reflecting his concern with religious education and popularization in his writing. Public information on the rest of McConnell's life is limited, and no conjecture is offered here.
