Editor's review

Työn orja (translatable as "The Slave of Labor") is a Finnish-language work by the Finnish author Eino Leino, released as a free eBook by Project Gutenberg. Leino is a major figure in Finnish literary history, and his writing often engages with social reality and individual fate. The book is short and belongs to Finnish-language literary resources; it serves well as an introductory text for understanding the language and themes of Finnish literature. The Project Gutenberg edition is a public-domain eBook, easy to search, copy, and read offline, and especially suitable for language learners reading alongside a translation. Readers should not expect a long, plot-heavy narrative; it is better approached as a sample of Finnish-language text, with attention to the rhythm of the language and the author's treatment of the theme of labor. Reading it together with background material on Finnish history and literature will deepen understanding. Note that the book is in the original Finnish and provides no Chinese translation; non-Finnish readers will need tools or a parallel translation.

About the author

Eino Leino (1878–1926) was a Finnish poet and writer, with 21 works held in this collection. Public information about him is limited, and the details of his life are difficult to verify; yet his works show that he wrote chiefly poetry and narrative prose, drawing on Finnish folk legend, nature, and mythological imagination. Representative works include Helkavirsiä I-II, Tuonelan joutsen, Sota valosta, and Alla kasvon kaikkivallan: Mystillinen trilogia, whose titles reveal a strong lyrical and mystical character. His writing often combines folk-song rhythm with modern poetic thought, in a concise and musical language, and he occupies an important place in Finnish literature's transition from national romanticism to modern poetry, exerting a lasting influence on later poets.
