About the author
János László Pyrker (1772–1847) was a Hungarian writer active in the first half of the nineteenth century who wrote in German; details of his life are limited in publicly available sources. Three of his works are held here, mostly historical and religious narratives. Rudolph von Habsburg is an epic in twelve cantos centered on the Habsburg ruler Rudolf, using kingship and heroic deeds to convey themes of order and faith. Perlen der heiligen Vorzeit draws on religious legend in a solemn, devotional tone, while Tunisias treats historical material in epic form, combining elaborate scenes with careful versification. His style leans on the classical epic tradition, with steady narration and elegant imagery in the service of moral and religious meaning, and it had some influence on historical and religious narrative in Central European German-language literature of his time.
