Editor's review

The Untamed is a Western by the American popular novelist Max Brand, a fairly representative genre novel of early twentieth-century American popular literature. Brand was known for creating laconic, highly capable Western heroes, and this book continues that character type, driving the narrative through action scenes and confrontations with a brisk pace and strong readability. Project Gutenberg's free electronic edition lets readers encounter the original American Western novel at low cost, making it a good sample for understanding twentieth-century American popular literature and the evolution of the Western genre. It does not aim for literary experimentation; its value lies in skilled genre storytelling and atmosphere. For readers studying popular culture or genre fiction, or looking for a tightly paced English original, this book is a suitable entry point; but those expecting deep psychological portrayal or social critique may find it falls short.
