Editor's review

The Stronger Influence is a novel by the English author F. E. Mills Young, classified under English literature and released free of charge as an eBook by Project Gutenberg. As an early full-length novel by a woman writer, its value lies in offering a reading sample of English fiction from the late Victorian to early twentieth-century period, suited to readers interested in the literary tastes and family and emotional narratives of that era. The Project Gutenberg edition is easy to open at any time on a computer, tablet, or e-reader, and is also suitable for English reading practice with the original text. When reading, focus on how the character relationships are developed and on the narrative pacing, rather than expecting the intense conflicts of a modern genre novel. Because the text dates from an earlier period, its language habits and manner of plot development differ from contemporary works, and readers need a little patience to get into it.

About the author

Florence Ethel Mills Young Author · British · 1875–1945

Florence Ethel Mills Young (1875–1945) was a British writer of popular fiction, born in Twickenham in 1875 and died in Cape Town in 1945. Public information about her is limited, and many details of her life remain unknown. Between 1910 and 1941 she produced about fifty novels, a considerable output. Her early works are mostly set among British settlers in South Africa, portraying everyday life and fortunes in the colony. Seven of her works are held here, including Grit Lawless, The Shadow of the Past, The Bigamist, The Triumph of Jill, Coelebs: The Love Story of a Bachelor, Imprudence and The Stronger Influence, with The Shadow of the Past often regarded as her representative work. Her novels stay close to ordinary life, with brisk plots and clear emotional threads, offering the readability and narrative pace common to popular fiction and suiting the tastes of general readers of her time; they also provide a sample for observing early twentieth-century British popular literature.
