Editor's review

The Long Trick is an English-language work by the British author Bartimeus (1886–1967). It belongs to English literature and is available as a free e-book from Project Gutenberg. Bartimeus was known for writing about naval subjects, and this book continues his maritime narrative style. It will appeal to readers interested in British naval life and early twentieth-century English literature. The Project Gutenberg edition is easy to obtain free on electronic devices and makes a lightweight choice for reading English originals. For Chinese readers, it can serve as supplementary reading for understanding the context of English maritime literature and can also be used for extensive English reading practice. Note that the book is an English original and was written rather early, so its language style is somewhat distant from contemporary English; readers with some foundation in English reading are advised to try it. Reading it alongside background on British naval history will make the characters and scenes easier to understand and the experience more complete.

About the author

Bartimeus, 1886-1967 Author · British · 1886–1967

Bartimeus (1886–1967) was a British naval officer and writer. His real name and early life are poorly documented, and he is generally known by the pen name Bartimeus. Drawing on his own naval career for material, he turned to writing fiction on naval themes, with works largely based on life at sea and military experience, written in a realistic style with a strong narrative pace. Two of his works are held in the collection, A Tall Ship and The Long Trick, both continuing his focus on naval and maritime experience and securing him a place in the tradition of twentieth-century British maritime and naval fiction. Because relatively little biographical material survives, the full range of his writing remains known only in part, and readers chiefly come to know this officer-writer through the works mentioned above.
