Editor's review

The Gray Mask is an early American popular novel by Wadsworth Camp, a public-domain text in the Project Gutenberg free eBook collection. Camp was active in the early twentieth century, and his work often carries a flavor of suspense and adventure; this book follows suit, building its narrative around hidden identity and the revelation of truth, with a tight plot and an atmosphere steeped in period feel. As a public-domain eBook, its value lies not only in the readability of the text itself but in the window it offers onto the narrative tastes of early twentieth-century American popular fiction. Reading it, one senses how suspense was paced in the fiction of the time—more restrained than in modern thrillers, yet still palpably tense. It suits readers looking for a supplementary glimpse of early American genre fiction, and those curious about public-domain eBook resources can dip in at leisure. Since it is the original English text, the barrier lies in language rather than depth of content, and it can be picked up during a commute or in short sessions.

FAQ

Is this book in Chinese or English?
This is the original English edition, released by Project Gutenberg as a public-domain eBook. Chinese readers need some English reading ability; if the priority is following the plot, a dictionary tool can help.
Is The Gray Mask suitable for people studying literature?
It can serve as a sample reference for early American popular genre fiction, but it is not a scholarly critical edition and lacks notes and an introduction, so it is better as supplementary material than as a primary research text.
What are the features of the Project Gutenberg edition?
Project Gutenberg provides free public-domain electronic texts, and this is one of them. The edition prioritizes text accessibility, with simple formatting suited to reading on electronic devices, but it contains no modern-publisher prefaces or notes.

About the author

Charles Wadsworth Camp (Wadsworth Camp) Author · American · 1879–1936

Charles Wadsworth Camp (1879–1936), known by the pen name Wadsworth Camp, was an American journalist, playwright and novelist. His works include The Abandoned Room, The Gray Mask and The Guarded Heights, with three titles held in the collection. He served as a war correspondent and was injured by poison gas during World War I; he died in 1936. Because public information is limited, a full account of his writing is difficult to give, but his surviving works show a talent for building suspense, tight plotting and attention to his characters' psychology under pressure, with the readability of popular fiction. He was also the father of children's author Madeleine L'Engle, a family background that offers a further clue to his life.
