Who it's for
A good fit for
- Nordic literature enthusiasts with some Danish who want to read the original
- Scholars studying late nineteenth-century Danish literature and narrative technique
- Anyone needing a public-domain electronic text for textual analysis or corpus building
- Readers interested in Project Gutenberg editions and digital publishing
Not a good fit for
- General readers with no Danish who expect to read directly in Chinese
- Advanced researchers needing detailed annotation, introduction, or a scholarly critical edition
- Readers who prefer fast-paced contemporary fiction and lack patience for classical realist prose
Reading tips
- Read a Chinese or English translation or introduction to Bang first, then compare with the original to grasp the style.
- After each chapter, summarize the scene and character relationships in one sentence rather than following plot alone.
- Mark unfamiliar words without looking them up immediately; deal with them after a paragraph to keep reading rhythm.
- Read alongside works by contemporary Nordic writers to observe differences in everyday narrative and impressionistic description.

About the author
Herman Bang (1857–1912) was a Danish writer, with thirteen of his works held in this collection. Public information about him is limited, so biographical details should not be added without confirmation. Judging from his representative works, his writing often draws on the everyday lives and inner worlds of ordinary people. The novels Haabløse Slægter and Ved Vejen are commonly regarded as important works: the former concerns the confusion and sense of loss of the younger generation, while the latter depicts the emotional entanglements of provincial characters in a restrained manner. The short-story collection Excentriske Noveller shows his interest in personality and psychological detail. His narrative style tends toward delicate realism, revealing loneliness, repression, and a sense of fate within everyday scenes, and it has had some influence on the tradition of psychological portrayal in modern Nordic literature.
