Summary

SQL Server 2014: From Beginner to Master is an introductory SQL Server database tutorial published by Tsinghua University Press, written by Wang Liping, Liu Xiangmiao, and Peng Ji. The book is divided into 4 parts and 20 chapters. Part 1, Fundamentals (Chapters 1–7), begins with the concepts and architecture of relational databases, then introduces the version features, installation and uninstallation of SQL Server 2014, creating and managing databases, data tables and common constraints, creating and using views, and everyday management and maintenance operations such as bringing databases online and offline, detaching and attaching, importing and exporting, backup and restore, shrinking, and generating scripts. Part 2, Core Techniques (Chapters 8–12), systematically explains T-SQL fundamentals, including data types, variables, and flow-control statements, as well as simple queries, function queries, composite queries, join queries, and subqueries, extending to data manipulation and the implementation of stored procedures and triggers. Part 3, Advanced Applications (Chapters 13–18), covers index operations and maintenance, the use of cursors, and the concept and application of transactions, while also introducing common functions supported by SQL Server 2014 and briefly touching on database performance optimization and the impact of cloud computing and big data on database technology. Part 4, Database in Practice (Chapters 19–20), uses two case studies—an enterprise ERP management system and a personnel management system—to demonstrate the complete process from requirements analysis and database design to system development and deployment. The book integrates over a hundred everyday database management examples, each with illustrated step-by-step implementation and analysis, and provides comments and common-pitfall tips for key code, aiming to let readers learn by doing and master the practical operation of SQL Server 2014.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ

About the author

Author

Wang Liping is an author about whom limited public information is available. His works mainly span two fields: the compilation of lyric documents and research on academic Chinese. In the area of lyrics, he participated in compiling the multi-volume A Century of Yuefu: A Chronological Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Lyrics, which systematically arranges Chinese lyrics of the modern and contemporary periods in chronological order and provides primary sources for studying the development of lyric writing and cultural change over time. In language research, he is the author of the Academic Chinese Research Series: Chinese Academic Discourse and Its Teaching Research, a specialized work on the linguistic features of academic discourse and related teaching issues. Available sources do not record his nationality, dates of birth and death, or personal experience, so his biography cannot be described in detail. Judging from his five works in the database, Wang Liping's writing combines documentary compilation with academic research, with topics leaning toward material accumulation and language teaching, and his output has certain reference value.
