Editor's review

Sisters Three is an English novel by Mrs. George de Horne Vaizey, released free through Project Gutenberg. Mrs. Vaizey was a British popular-fiction author of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries whose works mostly center on family, marriage, and women's growth; the title alone shows that this novel revolves around three sisters, a typical domestic-life subject. Its value as reading lies not in any pioneering place in literary history but in offering a window onto the daily life, women's circumstances, and narrative tastes of middle-class families of the time; the language is plain and the plot moves clearly, making it suitable for light reading or as English-learning material. The Gutenberg edition is easy to search and excerpt at any time, but it has no introduction or notes, so readers must fill in the historical background themselves. If you are used to the fast pace and strong conflict of modern fiction, you may find it gentle and slow; if you enjoy old-style narratives with delicate relationships and a strong sense of life, you will read it comfortably. Read it in a relaxed mood and do not rush.

Reading tips

About the author

Mrs. George de Horne Vaizey (1857–1917), born Jessie Bell Vaizey, was a British novelist active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She was best known in her lifetime for popular novels about the growth of young girls and family life. Her works often centre on school stories, domestic routines, and emotional development, written in a gentle and cheerful style that suited the interests of juvenile readers. Twenty-three of her works are held here, including More about Pixie, Betty Trevor, The Heart of Una Sackville, A Houseful of Girls, Etheldreda the Ready: A School Story, An Unknown Lover, The Fortunes of the Farrells, and Flaming June. Her school stories are set in school life and show girls growing through friendship, study, and family duty, and were well received among young readers of the time. Because public information is limited, details of her life are difficult to describe fully, but her themes and style still reflect the face of women's popular fiction in that era.
